Bringing HTTP/2 to GOV.UK

14th April 2020 - London Web Performance Meet-up (London, virtual)

I've been trying to enable HTTP/2 on GOV.UK for 18 months. The initial trial back in October 2018 showed via synthetic testing that it actually slowed the site for many users. This talk goes into the history of why this happened, what was found initially, what was discovered along the way, and what changes were made to allow it to be successfully deployed to actually improve GOV.UK's performance. I've written quite a popular blog post about the intricacies involved in reading a WebPageTest Waterfall chart. This is the third speaking event I gave the talk at, this time for another international audience as Lazy Load South is held in Sydney, Australia. The talk was recorded and played twice over 2 consecutive weekends, this was to make sure that as many time-zones across the world were able to watch the talks at a reasonable time of day.
